Shelley Heffler attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York where she studied interior design and art. She graduated from Cal State Northridge with a Master’s degree in fine art and teaching. After extensive travels in Europe and Asia, she settled in Los Angeles where she taught ceramics and fine art for 25 years at L.A. Unified and Otis College of Art and Design. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and reviewed in the British magazine Hedge, Los Angeles Times, and San Diego Art Review. Shelley has recently been identified as “One to Watch” on Saatchi On Line. Now retired from teaching, she is dedicated to her art practice. Heffler’s paintings and sculptures are informed by a passion for maps and are inspired by cartography, NASA digital imagery, topography, and a deep concern for the interconnectedness of the world.
JAI Featured Artist of the Month- Shelley Heffler
Dear Art Lovers,
I am honored to be recognized by Jewish Art Initiative as Artist of the Month for my artwork. This new body of work follows my Rescued Refuse series, inspired by the materiality of used vinyl banners, The process of manipulating the vinyl, tearing, slicing, cutting and painting leads to shapes that ebb and flow in time and space.
